• Foundations of argumentation and the path to argumentation through analysis of course reading texts. • Identification and evaluation of claims, supporting evidence, and assumptions in written texts. • Principles of persuasion and the rhetorical triangle (ethos, pathos, logos). • Core components of effective argumentation: thesis statements, supporting evidence engagement with counter-arguments and rebuttal, synthesising conclusions • Structure and organization of argumentative essays. • Analysis of model argumentative essays. • Guided practice in argumentative writing through structured writing prompts. • Two in-class argumentative writing tasks with draft–feedback–revision cycles. • Integration of reading comprehension and vocabulary development with writing tasks. • Preparation for course assessments including the visa exam, writing exam, and final exam.
